When commissioned to illustrate the article "Kansakunnan tunkiolla," I wanted to visually capture the concept of national institutions in decline. I settled on a house of cards metaphor, constructing a collapsing structure from what appears to be official documents and papers.
I chose a limited color palette: gray, white, black, and a touch of pink. The split background creates tension across the composition, while the diagonal arrangement guides the viewer's eye through the piece. To integrate the text element, I broke apart the word "TUNKIO" across the falling structure, allowing some letters to tumble with the collapsing cards.
The technical process involved layering several textures to give the documents a tactile quality while keeping the overall composition clean enough to work at various sizes. I deliberately positioned "KANSANVALLAN" (of the nation) at the bottom of the composition to reinforce the thematic foundation.
My goal was straightforward: create a visual that would complement the article's examination of institutional fragility without overwhelming the text it accompanies. The final illustration serves as an entry point to the deeper discussions within the written piece.
